Theme

Shakespeare uses many themes throughout the play "Romeo and Juliet"  to better develop the story. The theme I find to be most evident is The Fickle Nature of Love. Romeo was in love with Rosaline then after meeting Juliet once he claimed to have fallen in love with her and out of love with Rosaline. "At this same ancient feast of Capulet's, Sups the fair Rosaline whom thou so lovest, With all the admired beauties of Verona: Go thither; and, with unattained eye, Compare her face with some that I shall show, And I will make thee think thy swan a crow." (Shakespeare.I.ii.94-99) In this part Benvolio is saying to Romeo to get back out there and go to the party with him and once he sees the other pretty girls it'll make Rosaline look ugly to him and he will fall for someone else, and he did. "Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.(Shakespeare.I.v.54-55) Romeo is saying that he had never felt love before he laid eyes on Juliet this night, even though earlier in the day he only wanted Rosaline. This shows the fickle nature of love by showing how love is constantly changing. This theme can relate to present day as well as the past. Love will always be fickle. These days you always see high school students who date for 2 weeks then break up and have another boyfriend/ girlfriend within a couple days, this shows the fickle nature of love. Teenagers tend not to know what they want until they get older and understand more and therefore they're love is always changing. Romeo and Juliet were only teenagers when they got married after knowing each other for only a short period of time.
